Why is the server market so flooded?

I want to talk about something that I find I get quite annoyed about. Nearly every 9 year old and their brother owns a minecraft server.

What does this result in? A damn saturated market?

Why do they have servers? Is it to make money? Because clearly, nearly all of them fail.
